Diamond Cut

A diamond cut is a style used when shaping a diamond for polishing such as the Brilliant Cut. In the strictest definition of the term, "cut" is not the same thing as "shape" but refers to the symmetry, proportioning and polish of a diamond. The terms "shape" and "cut" are often used interchangeably.

The cut of a diamond refers not only to the shape of the diamond and number of facets, but also to the quality of the cut. A diamond with uneven or poorly proportioned facets won't be given the same grade of cut as an ideally proportioned and masterfully cut stone. This information is found on the certificate of a diamond that has been certified.

Most diamond shapes are cut with 58 facets, or separate flat surfaces, according to mathematical formulas. Using symmetry, the cutter aligns these facets at precise angles in relation to each other to maximize the reflection and refraction of light.

The most popular of diamond cuts is the 58-facet, modern round brilliant. Fancy cuts which come in a variety of shapes are also very popular. Many fancy cut diamonds were derived from the round brilliant cut.

Although most diamonds on the market today are round brilliants, there are many different shapes available. The following image shows some of the most popular shapes:
